October 8 street date. Canadian ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD made their name by crossing genres. Instead of working within traditional jazz standards, the classically-trained group sidestepped them and drew from hip hop and other contemporary genres to create a unique sound rooted in Black American music. Yet, their latest album and first for XL Recordings, "Talk Memory", sees the band take a different tact: paying homage to the musicians, composers, innovators and influences that first informed their work. With "Talk Memory", the trio of Alexander Sowinski (drums), Chester Hansen (bass) and Leland Whitty (guitar/ woodwinds), return to their beginnings. Following years of touring, the band paused to refresh and look at their history and experiences. Rather than improvising and developing tracks on the road, this time around that gestation process happened in the studio with a bevy of musicians walking through the doors on equal footing. As a result, the album is an aural odyssey about collective balance and harmony, with all the sense of psychedelic narrative that entails.
May 19 street date. Double vinyl LP. The hip-hop jazz trio BadBadNotGood goes all original on this album "III". While past albums have focused on covering top rap hits in a jazz style, "III" is all about original songwriting and the band's true musicality. There is a reason they went all the way up to #2 on Billboard's Jazz Chart. These Canadian jazz men do it all from all new traditional-sounding jazz to their mindblowing hip-hop beats. This album's songs "Can't Leave the Night," "Kaleidescope" and "Triangle" are real crowd pleasers that showcase this album's incredible range. This is their original 2014 release on vinyl.
May 19 street date. Double vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. BadBadNotGood is the talented young quartet of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, Alex Sowinski on drums and Leland Whitty on saxophone. BBNG took the music world by storm with their 2014 LP, "III", a brash yet refined record of angular jazz improvisations, lush ballads, kraut rock, and futuristic hip-hop tinged rhythms which led to a couple years of touring the world and collaborating with some of the best and brightest artists around the globe. 2016's "IV" continued their forward thinking progression, sounding something like a jam session in space between Can, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, Weather Report, Arthur Russell, and MF Doom.
Available now. At the start of 2024, BADBADNOTGOOD were brimming with new creative energy. Having just come off a run of one-off international tour dates and a series of sessions for projects with artists Daniel Cesar, Charlotte Day Wilson, reggie, Baby Rose, and Turnstile, the Canadian-trio of Al Sow, Chester Hansen, and Leland Whitty were eager to get back into the studio to simply create. The trio called on some of their closest friends and collaborators for an intensive and productive one-week of recording at Valentine Studios in Los Angeles in February 2024. The result of those sessions is the "Mid-Spiral" series, originally released as 3 parts digitally earlier this year and now collected altogether on double vinyl. The "Mid-Spiral" suites see BADBADNOTGOOD return to their roots of instrumental jazz while once again pushing the boundaries of how they cross pollinate genres, incorporating their love of hip-hop, neo-soul, psychedelic, funk and more. For the sessions, the trio incorporated additional musicians to add more voices of instrumentation, resulting in a deeply collaborative and expansive new sound.
