November 18 street date. ARBORIST release their debut album Home Burial on Kirkiriola Records. Mark McCambridge played his first show as ARBORIST in 2014 supporting James Yorkston. A solo tour of Ireland followed before impressive performances led to notable support slots alongside Low, Cat Power, Echo and The Bunnymen and Guy Garvey. 2015 saw the release of Twisted Arrow, the debut single by ARBORIST. A nonchalant and thoughtful piece of Americana, conceived in Belfast, it features the casual yet unmistakeable tones of KIM DEAL. It premiered on Stere-ogum and The Line of Best Fit (who described it as; “soaked in country-western hallmarks and nuanced flecks of The Decemberists"), and had extensive play on BBC 6Music. It was also featured in The Guardian Guide’s tracks of the week who described it as; “…not unlike a vexed, downcast version of The Breeders' country chug on 'Drivin on 9'. Arborist's second single, the lush, emotive “A Man of My Age” (also on the album) was released in 2016, with premieres on Clash Music, “Musically divine” and Folk Radio UK, as well as regularly featuring on Gideon Coe’s BBC 6music show. “Just beautiful. Basically, I’m going to play Twisted Arrow every chance I get!” – Tom Ravenscroft, BBC 6Music. // “Lovely number” – Guy Gar-vey // “Reminiscent of solo Robert Forster & early Lambchop.” – Pete Paphides // "This guy's a master songwriter..his muse is an earth-bound one - full of scruffy moments and careworn emotional truths. His development will be one of the most intriguing story strands of the year." - Hot Press Magazine.

January 21 street date. In an effort to sublimate the negative energy surrounding everyone in 2020, legendary Japanese post-rock band Boris focused all of their energy creatively and turned out the most extreme album of their long and widely celebrated career, "NO". The band self-released the album, desiring to get it out as quickly as possible but intentionally called the final track on the album "Interlude" with anticipation of a follow-up. The follow-up comes with "W", the band's debut album for their new label Sacred Bones Records. In contrast to the extreme sounds found on "NO", this new album whispers into the listener's ear with a trembling hazy sound meant to awaken sensation. On all of "W" Wata carries the lead vocal duties. In general the styles on the album range from noise to new age, as is typical with one of our generation's most dynamic and adventurous bands, but there is thread of melodic deliberation through each song that successfully accomplishes the band’s goal of eliciting deep sensation. Be it through epic sludgey riffs, angelic vocal reverberations or the seduction of their off-kilter percussion, Boris will have you fully under their spell.

June 17 street date. CD Digipack with 16 pg booklet. BORIS has always demolished expectations of what a band can do musically and aesthetically. In keeping with that tradition, they again flip the script for the band’s first official release in three years by serving up their most all-encompassing effort to date. Noise is an amplification of BORIS’ endless pursuit of musical extremes while moving aggressive, intense rock into new territories. In writing Noise, BORIS was intent upon condensing all that the band had explored over the years, in order to create something more bold, streamlined and powerful. And, upon completion, the band considers Noise its most defining effort, stating, "If we had to suggest just one album for those unfamiliar with BORIS’ music, we will pick this for sure." That’s a bold statement from a band having released over 20 albums covering a vast array of sounds. Yet somehow throughout the album’s 8 song, 58 minute duration, the band masterfully intermingles sludge-rock, blistering crust punk, shimmering shoegaze, epic thunderous doom, psychedelic melodies and just about everything else they’ve ever done. Over the course of BORIS’ three previous Sargent House albums (Heavy Rocks, Attention Please and New Album) the band sought to expand its musical vision ever further. And, the results helped redefine the band’s already iconoclastic sound. However, in early 2013 they decided to return to their classic trio lineup moving forward: drummer/vocalist Atsuo, guitarist/vocalist Wata and bassist/guitarist/vocalist Takeshi. Having been able to explore many new ideas as a quartet in recent years, the band was concerned about logistics, until their very successful residency shows and tour in the U.S. convinced them that BORIS could return to the simpler, solid trio without sacrificing artistic growth. Now, having rebuilt the classic trio’s 'equilateral triangle' they’re heavier, louder, more confident and incisive than ever before.

September 23 street date. What truly inspired an hour-plus collaboration between two of the most respected names in extreme experimentation? The album itself contains a statement that says it all: "A story like this deserves to be born." Japanese doom radicals Boris have spent more than two decades releasing wildly diverse music that’s mesmerized audiences clamoring for sludge, rock or unbridled pop. Their impressive and extensive release history, though, pales in comparison to Merzbow aka Masami Akita. The noise paragon has almost 400 releases to his name, and over the course of 35 ear-tattered years he’s influenced multiple generations of artists and musicians. After these two forces first came together in 2002 for the landmark Megatone album, they spent years perfecting a worthy follow-up. And in 2005, Sun Baked Snow Cave was the overwhelming culmination. Considering that these two forces are capable of eradicating most any listener, the album at first seems like a striking illustration of restraint and reflection. But the lonesome, mournful void of a strummed acoustic guitar is soon enough smothered by drones and swarms of feedback that intertwine with pulsating, yowling electronics - two worlds that both harmonize and struggle against each other. The sound of visionaries trying to draw blood. (First time on vinyl! Limited pressing of 1200 copies.)
BORIS with MICHIO KURIHARA (GHOST, WHITE HEAVEN, DAMON & NAOMI) - a not unlikely combination, but who thought it would happen? Yet they play with such fantastic harmony. Rainbow is not just a perfect combination; it is a meeting place, with all players aligned in a singular cause - to make a album that elevates us and them. For such a formidable combine of noise-making rock and rollers, there is much open space here. Sometimes akin to a topless chasm extending forth into the firmament, Rainbow is also a horizonless atmosphere, with Boris’ spacious trio creation scorched by traces of Kurihara’s skywriting guitar leads - make no mistake: the album is not without its moments of speaker-shredding intensity. Is elegance a word for Boris? They array their rock with great care, and Kurihara’s encyclopedic habit of guitar tones accompanies them with great sensitivity - ranging from Mesozoan stomps to near-static meditations to concise melodies rendered with precision.
October 9 street date. The Russian duo also known as ASTMA worked with DAVE PHILLIPS in June 2009; the recordings combine the energy unleashed by ALEXI BORISOV and OLGA NOSOVA together with the more continuous sound world of Phillips and occasional rapid editing from him. Densely orchestrated electronics with a hypnotic, psychedelic feeling that embraces elements of weird free-form spoken word, minimalism, free jazz, noise, heavy acid, electroacoustic, dub and a variety of acoustic torture.
August 6 street date. Disco Recharge is proud to present the fourth in the series of our Boris Midney special editions. Disco pioneer Midney had survived the ‘death of Disco’ in 1979 and somehow segued effortlessly into the 80’s with his unique brand of polished dance music. However in the US the backlash against disco meant his next album ‘Companion’ remained unreleased in the country that had adopted him and originally allowed him to realise his musical vision. Subsequently the album was only released on the French Barclay label back in 1981, making it one of the rarest and most collectible albums in the Boris Midney catalogue. ‘Companion’ remains true to Midney’s musical roots but with an obvious early 80’s influence. Disc one features the complete original album plus three bonus tracks including the full 12" mixes on 'Living Up To Love' and 'Step On Out'. Disc two collects Midney’s early 80’s one-off projects together. Double Discovery’s ‘Can He Find Another One’ was co-written and produced by the legendary Jim Burgess and is included here in all its versions. ‘D-D-D-Dance’ IS Midney at his most experimental whilst closing the album is the sublime 'Thanks For Loving Me' - a rare groove track of the highest calibre.
Available now. Couscous is Andreas Ledl (clarinet, electric bass), Ralph Wakolbinger (drums, percussion), Martin Max Offenhuber (electronics, ghosttube, saz) and Thomas Binder-Reisinger (guitar, guzli). An Austrian group who have two earlier releases out on Pumpkin Records released in 2006 ('Couscous') and 2013 ('Trans'). Also they did much collaboration, with Damo Suzuki, Thollem McDonas (!) and many others. Boris Hauf, also from Austria, already participated on 'Trans' and is now again a natural partner to work with. Also Bob Donc guests on one track, playing zurna flute and field recordings on 'Lord Skeleton Dance'. What is Couscous about? They produce pompous, pulsating vehicles of massive sound. Heavy and loud music, departing from a rock and punk attitude. Some of the tracks move into sound research. Others are hammering, rhythm-driven entities. They serve their aggressive music raw on your plate. Either you like it, or not. They incorporate many different influences of (kraut) rock, improvisation, noise, sound collage, etc. Sometimes leading up to surprising twists and turns. No doubt they are an adventurous unit, seeking for the extreme.
