"Slanted & Enchanted" is a left-field classic, a record that came out of nowhere to help establish a new subgenre of rock & roll. Pavement had already sketched out their sound, as well as their amateurish lo-fi aesthetic, on a series of indie singles before recording their debut, but "Slanted & Enchanted" is where they pulled all of their disparate sounds together into a distinctive style. The album was named the #1 album of all time by Blender Magazine.

The "Watery, Domestic" EP marked the recording debuts of both Bob Nastanovich and Mark Ibold on percussion and bass respectively - although both had been touring members for some time. The debut album, Slanted and Enchanted and the preceding EPs had been recorded by a trio of Stephen Malkmus, Spiral Stairs and Gary Young. This was the final time Young would record with the band. As well as the standard CD and 12" vinyl releases, the record was also available as a 12" picture disc in the UK.

"Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" was released in 1994. With this album, the band abandoned
the lo-fi sound displayed on "Slanted and Enchanted" (as well as their drummer, Gary Young). During the tour for "Slanted", the band added percussionist Bob Nastanovich and bassist Mark Ibold; partway through this album's recording sessions, Gary Young was replaced by Steve West. The album featured the band at its most easily accessible, and the single "Cut Your Hair" was Pavement’s closest brush with mainstream success.

"Wowee Zowee" was Pavement’s third studio album. The album showcased a more experimental and spontaneous side of the group, returning them to the clatter and unpredictability of their early recordings after the classic rock vibe of 1994's "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain". The cover art was painted by New York-based artist Steve Keene. The album is regarded as Pavement's most experimental record. Rolling Stone speculated that the relative success of their previous album was a reason for Zowee’s eclectic nature; the magazine's review claimed Pavement were afraid of success. Stephen Malkmus later refuted this, attributing the stylistic shift to excessive marijuana consumption.

"Brighten the Corners" is mature but wise-assed, melodic but complex. It's a record that reveals its gifts gradually, giving you enough information the first time to make you want come back for more. At first, the dissonant singsong verse of "Stereo" seems awkward, but it's all pulled into perspective with the gleeful, addictive outburst of the chorus, and that is a microcosm of the album's appeal. The first time around, the winding melody of "Shady Lane," the psycho jangle pop of "Date With Ikea," the epic grace of "Type Slowly," and the speedy rush of "Embassy Row" make an impression, but repeated listens reveal sonic and lyrical details that make them indelible.

Pavement's Stephen Malkmus has been rock & roll's greatest expressionist, his work marked by an emotional clarity all the more impressive for the way it stays doggedly fuzzy around the edges. "Terror Twilight" was his most direct statement of purpose ever (in short: Things hurt, and growing up is hard, but kissing helps), and still the songs and lyrics slide around with a decorous unpredictability, like ice on a hot stove. This is an album full of folkrock lucidity, tough-guy guitar spills, space-rock languor and a debonair heartache worthy of Seal or Morrissey. Give it half a chance and it will reveal itself as an exquisitely focused portrait of the most consistent band of the ‘90s. - Rolling Stone.
August 11 street date. The Secret History Vol. 1 is the first in a series of Pavement rarities compilations. The 30 tracks presented, 25 of which are available on vinyl for the first time ever, include b-sides, unreleased session tracks, John Peel sessions, and a 1992 live concert from the Slanted and Enchanted era (1990-1992). The deluxe double LP with printed inner sleeves contains essays by Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs, plus essays from Matador Records, Billions Corporation, and Drag City bosses, and a gorgeous gatefold designed by Rob Carmichael (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors).
April 8 street date. "Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal" is an exhaustive 45-track reissue of the band's much-loved fifth and final album. The new special edition compiles the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, era-appropriate live recordings, and even the rough tracks from Pavement's scrapped session at Sonic Youth's Echo Canyon studio. Altogether, it features 28 unreleased tracks. The 4xLP and 2xCD editions will include a book with never-before-seen photos and commentary/context from band members Mark Ibold, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, Spiral Stairs, and Steve West as well as producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck). The LP will restore Godrich's suggested sequence - which foregrounds the album's headiest songs - while the CD preserves the final track order assembled by the band. Originally released in 1999, "Terror Twilight" marked a departure from Pavement's established operating methods. Which is to say that it was recorded with a big-time producer in an expensive studio. However, for all the talk of "polish" and "precision", it's still very much a Pavement record. And a great one. Like every Pavement album that preceded it, "Terror Twilight" thrills and confounds. Often at the same time. Twenty-two years on, the songs remain moody, strange, and eminently deserving of re-celebration.

April 8 street date. Originally released 2 weeks after their final album "Terror Twilight", Matador reissues Pavement's 1999 EP, "Spit On A Stranger", available for the first time on 12" vinyl. Along with the titular "Terror Twilight" single the EP includes 4 B-side tracks, 1 of which being the sleeper social media sensation "Harness Your Hopes" that has since become the most streamed song in Pavement's catalogue. Whether you heard it as a piece of late-1990s fans-only arcana or as the soundtrack to a stranger's dance routine, you can now experience the songs again with the full vinyl release of the "Spit On A Stranger" EP. Don't miss Pavement's upcoming appearances September 26/27 at Massey Hall in Toronto.
August 12 street date. This year we celebrate 30 years of Pavement's debut full-length, "Slanted and Enchanted". First released by Matador Records on April 20, 1992, it remains a truly monumental album - one that defined/ruined a generation and a genre, depending on who you ask. To mark the occasion the iconic album is going to be reissued on limited red/white/black splattered vinyl. In their own way, Pavement changed the face of 1990s rock just as much as Nirvana, at least for those with an ear closer to the ground of the indie scene. In fact, they virtually defined the indie scene for that decade, and "Slanted and Enchanted" was the non-anthem of slacker rock. For years after its release, every hip indie band seemed to imitate their Fall-influenced, off-kilter sound and post-functional, obscurantist lyrical approach. Pavement are set to bring their unique brand of indie-rock back for 2 nights at Toronto's Massey Hall this September.
July 15 street date. Originally released in 1993, Matador Records is reissuing Pavement's "Westing (By Musket And Sextant)" for the first time. Compiling their early material from 1989-1993, the 23 track album showcases the formative years of Pavement before the breakthrough success of their debut. "Westing (By Musket And Sextant)" includes songs from their first 3 EP's, ("Slay Tracks: 1933-1969", "Demolition Plot J-7", and "Perfect Sound Forever") along with the "Summer Babe" single and 2 extra compilation tracks. The new pressing coincides with the recent release of the "Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal" 4xLP box set and the 30th anniversary edition of "Slanted And Enchanted".

First released by Matador Records on April 20, 1992, it remains a truly monumental album - one that defined/ruined a generation and a genre, depending on who you ask. To mark the occasion the iconic album's first iteration has been replicated in the form of the limited edition "Courting Shutdown Offers" cassette, featuring an early version of the album with a different running order and a handful of alternate track titles. In their own way, Pavement changed the face of 90s rock just as much as Nirvana, at least for those with an ear closer to the ground of the indie scene. In fact, they virtually defined the indie scene for that decade, and "Slanted And Enchanted" was the non-anthem of slacker rock. Used to shop an early version of the album to prospective record labels, the "Courting Shutdown Offers" cassette was what started it all.
Nov. 18 street date. The 4th in Matador’s series of super-deluxe reissues of the five classic Pavement albums is 1997’s Brighten The Corners. Subtitled the Nicene Creedence Edition, it contains the album remastered from the original tapes, plus 34 extra songs, of which 6 have never been heard before. More specifically, the bonus material includes 10 non-album B-sides, 10 outtakes (4 different versions and 6 entirely unreleased songs), and 14 live radio session tracks. Deluxe packaging includes an embossed slipcase with double CD in jewel case and 62-page perfect bound book featuring a huge essay by New Yorker critic Alex Ross, plus a poster and postcard. The wealth of extra material testifies to the extraordinary creativity of the band in this period, a rebirth heralded by the gelling of Pavement into a professional touring band as attested on these tracks.
