May 12 street date. The new music was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which was debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains, “I started thinking about things in a very mechanical way. I found it interesting how we would use our senses to come up with an emotional reaction. As I get older you get to know yourself better and I realized that a lot of my emotional reactions were mechanical responses and that was hugely influential. I didn’t want to be a robot. But the reason why we are superior to computers is that we have emotions and I realized that emotions are mechanical so the only thing left between us and robots is curiosity and inspiration - and I don’t think you can program that into a computer. That’s definitely where I was at when I started writing the record.” Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson has composed 15 scores for both film and television, including a trailer for The Walking Dead and Wim Wenders’ new 3D film Everything Will Be Fine, where he performed the songs ‘Cynical World’ (an original for the film) and ‘Lighthouse’. The recipient of Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson composes, performs and records his albums with a full band that includes Joe Grass (guitars), Robbie Kuster (drums/percussion) and Mishka Stein (bass).
April 14 street date. Released in May 2021, "A Mermaid in Lisbon" is a 3-song album by Patrick Watson, featuring Teresa Salgueiro and the Attacca Quartet. "The inspiration for these three pieces came the last time I was walking the streets of Lisbon. It's my favourite place to wander it just generally feels like the streets are singing this wonderful melancholic sound for your walk, that pulls you into small winding roads, that make you feel like you'll get lost and never return. Hence the mermaid title. It's an incredible place and it was the one place in the world I missed most during the quarantine". The single, "Lost With You", was recorded during the pandemic when Patrick felt the urge to reach out to his fans and offer a little comfort. "I wanted to share this song with you", says Patrick, "I hope it keeps you good company".
October 7 street date. Patrick Watson is thrilled to announce "Better In The Shade", his seventh full-length studio album, set for release via Secret City Records worldwide. In Patrick's words, the new album "is about negotiating a world where you don't know what's real anymore. I really spent a lot of time reading to improve my lyrics for this record. I was very inspired by "Jesus' Son" by Denis Johnson, "The Waves" by Virginia Woolf, and "Fever Dream" by Samanta Schweblin. The lyrics are a collection of little thoughts that were pacing in my head. We worked hard on rebuilding the tones of our arrangements and we brought a bigger electronic component to the music. With the addition of modular synths, we were able to find a warmer and more touching approach to the electronics, that feel as acoustic as the rest of the instruments and move like liquid. Basically, I went back to school for the last two years to be able to bring something new ha-ha. Andrew Barr from the Barr Brothers joined us on drums for this record, it's a pleasure to play music with such a great musician".
