It was under the banner of those eternal connections that the trio of Bonny Light Horseman came together. From festival fields and a German art hub to a snowy upstate studio and everywhere in between, the astral folk outfit - comprised of Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats, The Shins), and Josh Kaufman (The National, Bob Weir) - is mixing the ancient, mystical medium of transatlantic traditional folk music with a contemporary, collective brush. Straight from the depths of an unused Boston-area concrete laboratory comes the debut of Sweeping Promises. Written and recorded with a patented "single mic technique" just before quarantine, "Hunger for a Way Out", is a post-punk leaning gem of unpolished DIY sound. The title track kicks things off in absolutely classic fashion, full of spirited hooks that echo the early Rough Trade sound. Angular guitars and sharp synth notes float atop a raw rhythm section, while Lira Mondal's effervescent vocals truly define Sweeping Promises' sound. There's something simple yet otherworldly about these tracks - you have the DIY prowess of Kleenex/LiLiPUT and Girls at Our Best!, a brooding new wave-y minimal synth sound woven in, and an undeniable pop-leaning appeal captured in vibrant monaural glory. It's hard to mistake these ten tracks of naturally urgent and driving post-punk for anything other than sheer brilliance. Sweeping Promises deliver in spades on "Hunger for a Way Out".

February 5 street date. Montreal art pop group Freelove Fenner release their long-awaited album, The Punishment Zone. The 14-song collection is an exercise in pleasing sounds, diaphanous textures, and concise song structure. The group listened to a century's worth of experimental, often cacophonous sounds and reshaped it into a mellow pop music. The group’s workshop is the strictly analog Bottle Garden Studio, a small room full of tape machines and homemade equipment that is integral to the group’s sound and process. Avoiding 21st century technology not out of any sort of snobbery or nostalgia but rather a desire to avoid the work habits inherent with contemporary tools, the band embraces the different results that come with a slower, more tactile process: the happy accidents; the absence of visual stimuli (no screens); the difficulty in attaining high gloss finishes. Freelove Fenner have released two EPs, In the Bottle Garden (2009), and Pineapple Hair EP (2012); as well as the full-length album Do Not Affect a Breezy Manner (2013), all on Montreal’s Fixture Records. The Punishment Zone will be released on Arizona’s minimal art label Moone Records (via Celluloid Lunch in Canada), joining an eclectic roster featuring artists like Tori Kudo, John Dieterich, Little Wings, Lithics, and others. June 12 street date. Solo electric guitar project of Brooklyn/Austin-based composer and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate. Creating what Iggy Pop described to Jim Jarmusch as "symphonies for people that don't have a lot of time", Lipstate has emerged as an innovative and defining voice in the world of music under the name Noveller. Wielding a guitar as her main instrument, Lipstate has pioneered a transcendent approach to composition through her mastery and integration of effects pedals and technology. Forming unexpected sonic routes, her songs are vivid and cinematic, telling intricate tales with each tone and swell. With her ability to add such unique sounds and textures, Lipstate has been sought out as a frequent collaborator, recently writing songs with Iggy Pop and performing as a member of his band on his worldwide tour.

January 8 street date. Soft-spoken with the look of a slightly disaffected 1950s matinee idol, Aaron Frazer possesses a unique voice that's both contemporary and timeless. On "Introducing", his debut solo album produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, Aaron melds mid-60s soul with Auerbach's particular sensibilities ('Over You'), songs with a message in the key of Gil Scott-Heron ('Bad News'), and uplifting tales of love told through a blend of disco, gospel, and doo-wop ('Have Mercy'). The Brooklyn-based, Baltimore-raised songwriter first came into the international spotlight as multi-instrumentalist and co-lead singer of Durand Jones & The Indications, but he's more than a revivalist act. On "Introducing", Aaron expertly calibrates consciousness-raising and the desire to be enveloped by love. Where previous records were written in a partial state of turmoil, Aaron's debut LP shows maturation and range. "Introducing" is both loving and gracious, critical without losing hope, and a showcase of a young artist on a seriously soulful ascent.

October 23 street date. This is The Kit are pleased to announce their new album ‘Off Off On’. Since 2008's debut album "Krulle Bol", This Is The Kit (led by Kate Stables) have unpicked emotional knots and woven remarkable stories, but even by their high standards, "Off Off On" is a beautifully clear distillation of Stables' song-writing gifts. By the end of 2018, the band had finished touring their last album, the talismanic "Moonshine Freeze" - leading to Kate's Ivor Novello nomination, but when it came to Stables' natural impulse to start the next record, her efforts were diverted by an invitation to join The National on the road for multiple tours and TV appearances - a continuation of the role she took on their album "I Am Easy To Find". Richly illuminating and acutely sensitive to the pulses and currents of life, "Off Off On" shows This Is The Kit overflowing with ideas. In difficult times, it's a record that feels like a lifeline, moving against the tide, standing against the storm. Keep going.

January 29 street date. Goat Girl are delighted to announce their new album "On All Fours", released via Rough Trade Records on January 29th. The new album was produced by Dan Carey (Kate Tempest, Black Midi and Franz Ferdinand). The album will be available on black double LP, transparent pink double LP, and CD. This new record sees the band veer away from the confrontational lyricism of their debut and indicates Goat Girl's maturing perspectives in discussing the world's injustices and social prejudices, using the music to explore global, humanitarian, environmental and mindful wellbeing.

Jan. 25 street date. Dan Bejar started DESTROYER in Vancouver as a solo home-recording project in the early to mid-1990's and has gone from strength-to-strength over the years (ask Pitchfork). 'Kaputt', Destroyer's ninth album, follows the limited edition "Bay Of Pigs" and "Archer On The Beach" 12" singles, both of which quickly sold out. June 26 street date. Gordi recorded her upcoming album ‘Our Two Skins’ in an old cottage on her parents' farm in remote Canowindra. The album was completed with the assistance of Bon Iver production duo Chris Messina and Zach Hanson. Losing someone close to you creates an almost phantom limb-like effect. Often, it feels like they're a phone call away. But that instant between when you reach for the phone and when your brain delivers the new reality to you is a strange, momentary eternity. It’s both an uncompromising void and maybe as close as you'll ever come to communing with that loved one again. On her new song "Sandwiches", Gordi harnesses all the sadness and glory of this feeling into a soaring, post-new wave anthem. One of the first true Gordi "guitar songs", it shimmers with the lush-yet-fragile momentum of The Cranberries' classic "Dreams".

Working under various aliases since 2014, Christina Schneider has explored everything from groovy garage rock to minimalist bedroom pop to Syd Barrett-style psychedelia. Buoyed by her desire to create the same "crazy, powerful feeling" she gets when she hears an ABBA or Kate Bush song, she reached again for the outer limits of pop music and recorded "Personalia", her sophomore album as Locate S,1. Schneider spends much of the album trying to understand and expel a darkness that has come over her (and society at large) in order to live a more fulfilling life. While she was writing and recording the album over the past year, she was thinking a lot about her own growth and self-worth as an artist, and where her constantly evolving and always experimental music fits in the digital age. Environmentalism, money, power, and modern feminism formed part of that conversation, too. Throughout "Personalia" Schneider seeks to address how the attention economy is plaguing us with feelings of FOMO and anxiety, and is causing many of us to abandon their progressive values.

Perfume Genius will join Tame Impala on a North American arena tour throughout the Spring and Summer including shows in Toronto (June 2nd), Montreal (June 3rd) and Vancouver (August 5th)
Set My Heart On Fire Immediately sees Hadreas re-teaming with GRAMMY-nominated producer Blake Mills and features contributions from musicians Jim Keltner, Pino Palladino and Matt Chamberlin. The album explores and subverts concepts of masculinity and traditional roles, and introduces decidedly American musical influences. Throughout the album Hadreas plays with themes of love, sex, memory and the body, channeling popular music mythologies while irreverently authoring its own. "I wanted to feel more open, more free and spiritually wild," says Hadreas, "and I'm in a place now where those feelings are very close-- but it can border on being unhinged. I wrote these songs as a way to be more patient, more considered -- to pull at all these chaotic threads hovering around me and weave them in to something warm, thoughtful and comforting"
