For Carried To Dust, Calexico called on a rotating cast of musicians and friends to help them create what is arguably their most varied and strongest work to date. The band lineup that solidified around Feast Of Wire is back again along with a number of guests, including Sam Beam, Douglas McCombs, and Pieta Brown. Along with extending collaborative bridges with other artists, Carried To Dust also reflects Calexico's amazing live shows, as well as underscoring the band's restraint and beauty. A remarkably well-rounded album, Carried To Dust showcases every aspect of Calexico's exceptional talents.
March 10th street date. Vinyl version of Calexico's debut album from 1997. "Nearly ten years has passed since we embarked on these initial home recordings on our trusty 8 track reel to reel. These were the first experiments of writing and recording with the newly bought thrift store instrumentation featuring marimba, vibraphone, accordion, cello, mandolin as well as the respective drums, guitar and bass. The songs have a certain lean to them and we appreciated the unusual character that came from this session. We started off minimal and one by one started adding instruments, both John and I as we saw fit, or adding vocals when we needed storyline. Spoke has an organic feel to it. In addition to these songs there are field recordings and outgoing tape machine messages that help to paint the picture of crooked adobe walls and empty downtown streets of Tucson. There's an element of space on this album that unfolds nicely upon the ear and it evokes the kind of late night aesthetic that holds up well to this day.”- Joey Burns
Please Note - date change: June 25 street date. 'Horska' is a b-sides companion EP to 2011's 'Constellation' album, which Gypsophilia recorded at Montreal's Hotel2Tango with noted indie producer Howard Bilerman. The title track, composed by the band's resident Jamaican music expert Alec Frith, is a wry and rollicking ride that plays with superimposing a Jewish hora over a ska riddim - hence the title - and includes a Frith-produced dub mix as a b-side. The other tracks on the EP range from the nostalgic-sounding 'Bir Hakeim' and 'Stickm', which showcase Matt Myer on (mostly muted) horn, to the at-times frenzied Klezmer-influenced piece 'Corentin Cariou' and the melancholy 'Oh my Oma', featuring Gina Burgess on plaintive violin. "Apart from superb musicianship, Halifax’s Gypsophilia has staked its tents on several musical fault lines which are troubled from moment to moment by subterranean tremors of jazz-pop, gypsy jazz, Parisian cafe pop, klezmer and unpredictable raw creativity from all seven of them." - Chronicle Herald Halifax

September 11 street date. Some 22 years since they first formed, Calexico have added yet another successful musical adventure to their list in the way of Algiers. You might think that after six studio albums and a suitcase of tour CDs, collaborations with the likes of Victoria Williams, Iron & Wine, Willie Nelson, Roger McGuinn and Nancy Sinatra, and soundtrack work to boot, there wasn’t much more they could achieve. But you’d be wrong. The feel of Algiers is recognizably classic Calexico but their style has been revitalized and reborn by the experience of recording in New Orleans. Conscious of the clichés that can sometimes afflict acts working in a city with such a strong identity, band members Joey Burns, John Convertino and producer, Craig Schumacher, chose to avoid the bigger, better known studios in favor of a smaller, more intimate setting. The result of this decision is arguably the most exciting and accessible record Calexico have made.

April 14 street date. For the better part of two decades, the acclaimed band Calexico has crossed musical barriers, embracing a multitude of styles, variety in instrumentation, and well-cultivated signature sounds. With their forthcoming record Edge of the Sun, out April 14th, they take inspiration from a trip to a place surprisingly unexplored by the band before in Mexico City, and with the benefit of many friends and comrades to help guide the way. The first outside invitation came when the band’s Joey Burns was writing the track 'Bullets and Rocks' and recognized space for a former Calexico collaborator. "When putting vocals on that song, it immediately reminded me of the Iron & Wine feel," says Burns. "So I texted Sam (Beam), who wrote back quickly and got it going." Encouraged by the experience, the guest list grew to include Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Nick Urata (Devotchka), Carla Morrison, Gaby Moreno, Amparo Sanchez, multi-instrumentalists from the Greek band Takim, and Neko Case. Burns’ brother John Burns lent a hand to some lyrics and songwriting, and the band’s keyboardist, Sergio Mendoza, stepped up to co-write and arrange certain songs, ultimately co-producing the album along with Burns, John Convertino, and longtime associate Craig Schumacher. Negotiating borders and the spaces within, then inviting others inside those edges: may be the recipe for Calexico’s success. As its empire expands and the familiar pieces join with fresh ideas and a new cohort to pass under wires and across fields and time, the band now finds itself here in 2015 on the solar precipice, navigating the edge and trying to find hope in that balance of darkness and light. "The ‘edge of the sun’ could be coming from the direction of darkness seeking light, or riding the line between both," says Burns. "All in all, this album is about pushing through the blue to brighter days. Calexico has always had that element of hope, going back and forth between a positive outlook and embracing desperate or dark themes that I think we all share."

January 26 street date. Over the past two decades, a strong sense of place has shaped the music of CALEXICO, infusing their albums with a stylistic unpredictability and richness of texture. While 2015’s Edge of the Sun brought the Tucson-bred band to the Mexico City borough of Coyoacán, their new full-length The Thread That Keeps Us mostly came to life in a house studio near the Northern California coast nicknamed “The Phantom Ship” by CALEXICO vocalist/guitarist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino. Like “End of the World with You,” much of The Thread That Keeps Us captures the anxieties and unease of living in tumultuous times. While the album draws a kinetic energy from all that uncertainty, its lyrics unfold with a literary nuance and sense of setting and character. “Instead of writing straight-up protest songs, I want to tell stories,” Burns says. Largely inspired by his wanderings around Northern California during the album’s production, the narratives embedded in The Thread That Keeps Us reflect on displacement, transitory existence, and—in Burns’s words—“returning to your home after being gone for some time and seeing how things have changed, and maybe not in the best way.”
