Smith, Sammi |
Looks Like Stormy Weather 1969-1975
|
February 4 street date. Sammi Smith sang soulful, melancholy country music. One of the highlights of Ace's acclaimed "Choctaw Ridge" compilation earlier this year was her ‘Saunders' Ferry Lane’, an eerie tale of doomed romance in a chilly backwater. Her low, distinctively husky voice was built for sad songs, and she has been described as country music's Dusty Springfield. Compiled and annotated by Bob Stanley, "Looks Like Stormy Weather" is a collection built for winter nights. Her most successful moment came in 1971, when she scored the original hit version of Kris Kristofferson's ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’, which peaked at #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 and earned Sammi a Grammy for "Best Country Vocal Performance by a Female". Now signed to the tiny Mega label, she would record seven albums for them between 1970 and 1975, and the pick of them are the heart of this compilation.

Cunningham, Rosalie |
Two Piece Puzzle
|
February 25 street date. Esoteric Antenna is delighted to announce the release of the wonderful new studio album by Rosalie Cunningham. After her celebrated band Purson played its final gig in late 2016, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rosalie branched out into a successful solo career. Her self-titled debut album issued in 2019 was acclaimed by both critics and fans. Alongside her debut album, Rosalie's live performances confirmed that she was a highly creative force and this is confirmed still further by the release of her splendid new album, ‘Two Piece Puzzle’. The record is a fine work of diverse moods which possesses the drama associated with Rosalie's music, but also demonstrates the evolution of her song writing craft and her remarkable abilities as a vocalist and musician.

Sound Ancestors (arranged by Kieran Hebden)
|
March 5 street date. Gil Evans to Miles Davis.... Holger Czukay to the ensemble known as Can....Jean Claude Vannier to Serge Gainsbourg on "Histoire de Melody Nelson". That's the only way to explain the specificity of Four Tet and Madlib's collaboration, in this special album that showcases a two-decade long friendship that has resulted in an album that follows Madlib's classics like Quasimoto's "The Unseen", "Madvillainy" and his "Pinata" and "Bandana" albums with Freddie Gibbs. "A few months ago I completed work on an album with my friend Madlib that we'd been making for the last few years. He is always making loads of music in all sorts of styles and I was listening to some of his new beats and studio sessions when I had the idea that it would be great to hear some of these ideas made into a Madlib solo album. Not made into beats for vocalists to use but instead arranged into tracks that could all flow together in an album designed to be listened to start to finish. I put this concept to him when we were hanging out eating some nice food one day and we decided to work on this together with him sending me tracks, loops, ideas and experiments that I would arrange, edit, manipulate and combine. I was sent hundreds of pieces of music over a couple of years stretch and during that time I put together this album with all the parts that fitted with my vision" - Kieren Hebden aka Four Tet.

Letts, Don |
Late Night Tales Presents Version Excursion (2LP-180g/black)
|
September 24 street date. Don Letts' slippery and unorthodox career is somewhat hard to define, without taking a few detours around London, New York, and Jamaica. He began his working life managing the dauntingly hip Acme Attractions on Chelsea's Kings Road, where he made a mark with his attitude, dress and, especially, the pounding dub reggae that vibrated the shop’s walls. His first gig as a DJ at the short-lived Roxy in Neal Street, became mythical for turning a generation of punks on to reggae. In the 1980s, he was part of Mick Jones’ new venture, Big Audio Dynamite and his innovative use of samples were a core part of their sound. This version excursion crosses time space and genre, with reggae and dub artists (and artists influenced by reggae and dub) such as John Holt, Khruangbin, Ghetto Priest, OBF, and Matumbi covering tracks from from The Beach Boys to The Beatles, Nina Simone to Marvin Gaye, The Bee Gees to Kool & The Gang, The Clash to Joy Division, and beyond.

Absolutely Free |
Aftertouch
|
April 1 street date. Absolutely Free has cultivated a decade-long reputation for an unorthodox approach to music. The Toronto psych pop trio’s Polaris nominated debut was hailed as “breathtakingly beautiful” (Stereogum) and a “deep-space cosmic-rock odyssey” (Pitchfork) upon its 2014 release. Aftertouch, the band's brilliant sophomore record, is a carefully wrought journey to our post-physical, hyper-digitized present. Introduced with the ascendant "How To Paint Clouds" – "a flying wedge of art pop" (Brooklyn Vegan) – and the kaleidoscopic "Interface" – "a pathway to another dimension" (CLASH) – the Jorge Elbrecht produced record (see Japanese Breakfast, No Joy, Gang Gang Dance) is a patina of disparate but harmonic styles. From austere New Wave to exultant IDM, it is inspired equally by Steve Reich and Laurie Spiegel as by A Certain Ratio, Magazine, YMO, (early) Simple Minds, and Talk Talk. Making reference to the name of a synthesizer function, Aftertouch deconstructs seismic shifts in culture, while lingering in the echoing sensations that remain. "Worth its weightless lingering in psychedelic gold" - Exclaim! / "Absolutely Free achieves prog-pop perfection... and it's glorious" - Brooklyn Vegan *Album of the Week*

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Deep Listening, Important Records offer a definitive double-LP combining the classic, complete original 1989 release with selected tracks from the Deep Listening Band 's 1991 album, The Ready Made Boomerang . Café Exil: New Adventures In European Music 1972-1980 (2LP)
|
December 11 street date. When David Bowie and Iggy Pop relocated from LA to continental Europe, taking trains to Berlin, Paris and Warsaw, they would have come across new music that was very different to the burgeoning disco scene they left behind. "Cafe Exil" - named after one of Bowie's favourite Berlin haunts - imagines the soundtrack that would have informed "Low", "Heroes" and "Lodger". It's an awesome mix of electronica, Krautrock and experimental treats. There are key tracks from members of Can and Tangerine Dream, fascinating obscurities by German act Streetmark and Italian library maestro Piero Umiliani, the Herzog-soundtracking Popul Vuh, and highly collectible avant-strangeness by Annette Peacock. Czech-born Jan Hammer's beautiful, light, atmospheric groove is among myriad surprises. "Cafe Exil" has been put together by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Jason Wood, author of multiple books on cinema and programmer at Home in Manchester. The 2LP vinyl edition features a bonus track from Edgar Froese.

Cuntry Covers Vol. 2 (EP) (LOSER edition-red vinyl)
|
February 24 street date. As its name suggested, the intimate and sultry "Cuntry Covers Vol. 1" was always going to have a follow-up. Led by the brooding vocals of Bria Salmena, "Cuntry Covers Vol. 2" is every bit as potent as its predecessor, whose noir-inflected alternative country-rock stood in sharp contrast to the singer's commanding delivery as leader of post-punk revivalists Frigs. Debuting the project in 2021, the languid, reverb-drenched "Cuntry Covers Vol. 1" saw her artfully collaborating with multi-instrumentalist Duncan Hay Jennings and reimagining a carefully picked collection of Americana anthems. "Vol. 2" pushes the envelope further and harder. Encompassing feverish takes on tracks by Gillian Welch, Paula Cole, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Robert Lester Folsom, Glen Campbell - by way of Nick Cave - and Loretta Lynn, Bria's deliciously dark approach shimmers through these six startling songs.

|
December 10 street date. Aeon Station's "Observatory" is an epic statement more than a decade in the making, with miles of timeless melodies and the kind of overpowering songwriting that will reaffirm your belief in life itself. Longtime Wrens member Kevin Whelan's first solo album draws heavily from the perseverance of the soul, resulting in rock music possessing an infectious and inspiring sonic uplift. If you're familiar with Whelan's past work, these ten tracks bear a certain and unmistakable familiarity - but they also mark an exciting new chapter in Whelan's musical career, as he steps out with more vulnerability than ever before. Whelan's scope of musical vision on "Observatory" is wide open and free with possibilities - at once recalling the reflective wisdom of Bruce Springsteen, Broken Social Scene's huge anthemic burn, and the Wrens' own pulsing-with-life take on rock music. First vinyl pressing on cloudy blue vinyl.

An Overview On Phenomenal Nature
|
February 19 street date. Ambient folk meets chamber pop by NYC artist who as played in the bands of Eleanor Friedberger, Craig Finn, and Lola Kirke. "An Overview on Phenomenal Nature" honours flux, detail, and moments of intimacy. Cassandra Jenkins arrived at engineer Josh Kaufman's studio with ideas rather than full songs - nevertheless, they finished the album in a week. Jenkins' voice floats amid sensuous chamber pop arrangements and raw edged drums, ferrying the listener through impressionistic portraits of friends and strangers. Her lyrics unfold magical worlds, introducing one to a cast of characters, like a local fisherman, a psychic at a birthday party, and a driving instructor of a spiritual bent.

Onyeabor, William |
World Psychedelic Classics, Vol. 5 (3LP) Who Is William Onyeabor?
|
Available now. The title of the fifth volume in Luaka Bop's World Psychedelic Classics series is perhaps the most aptly titled one. Nigerian musician and entrepreneur William Onyeabor is a bit of an intentional cipher biographically. He released eight albums and two singles on his own Wilfilms label between 1977 and 1985. After becoming a born-again Christian, he renounced his past and musical career. Onyeabor became a successful entrepreneurial businessman and an enthusiastic booster of Nigeria's hotbed of Christian music scene. He was also crowned high chief of his native Igbo people of Enugu, one of the country's capitals of commerce. The nine tracks on this years-in-the-making compilation feature music drenched in analog synths, early drum machine sounds, and wah-wah, phase-shifted guitars and basses. It is all seductive, infectious, and timeless. On set-opener "Body and Soul," Onyeabor co-opts tranced-out, Nigerian juju music, saturates it in slow Afro-funk, and weds it all to P-Funk's call-and-response lyric and chorus; after ten minutes, the effect is consciousness altering. "Atomic Bomb" is pure African disco with peeling, phased synths, fat basslines, drum loops, and strident, chunky guitars punctuated by Rhodes pianos; they create a spaced-out backdrop of nearly dubwise effects in this leisurely, insistently pulsing groover. The singing (a female chorus with Onyeabor adding his own gentle stream of consciousness musings) pushes it all to the margin. "Why Go to War," composed and recorded a decade after the Biafran/Nigerian civil war, bridges Onyeabor's brand of Afro-Funk to Fela Kuti's -- especially in the vocal chants and the militancy of its groove.

Big Time (2LP-black)
|
June 3 street date. Fresh grief, like fresh love, has a way of sharpening our vision and bringing on painful clarifications. No matter how temporary we know these states to be, the vulnerability and transformation they demand can overpower the strongest among us. Then there are the rare, fertile moments when both occur, when mourning and limerence heighten, complicate and explain each other; the songs that comprise Angel Olsen's "Big Time" were forged in such a whiplash. "I can't say that I'm sorry/when I don't feel so wrong anymore", the record begins, her voice softer and more open than ever, as if she's singing through a hard won smile. "Big Time" is an album about the expansive power of new love, but this brightness and optimism is tempered by a profound and layered sense of loss. During Olsen's process of coming to terms with her queerness and confronting the traumas that had been keeping her from fully accepting herself, she felt it was time to come out to her parents, a hurdle she'd been avoiding for some time. After that tearful but relieving conversation, she celebrated with her partner, their friends, oysters, and wine. Three days later, her father died; his funeral became the occasion for Olsen to introduce her partner to her family. Only two weeks later Olsen got the call that her mother was in the ER. Hospice came soon after, and a second funeral came quickly on the heels of the first. The shards of this grief - the shortening of her chance to finally be seen more fully by her parents - are scattered throughout the album.

LABYRINTHITIS (Peak Vinyl indie edition green/bone)
|
March 25 street date. "LABYRINTHITIS" brims with mystic and intoxicating terrain, the threads of Dan Bejar's notes woven through by allusions at once eerily familiar and intimately perplexing. The record circuitously draws ever inward, each turn offering giddy surprise, anxious esoterica, and thumping emotionality at equal odds. Throughout, "LABYRINTHITIS" insists that everything's not all right, but that even isolation and dissolution can be a source of joy - stepping into the sunlight at the other end of the maze in your ear, Bejar strolling alongside like a wild-maned, leisure-suited minotaur. More than an arcane puzzle for the listener, "LABYRINTHITIS" warps and winds through unfamiliar territory for Bejar as well. Written largely in 2020 and recorded the following spring, the album most often finds Bejar and frequent collaborator John Collins seeking the mythic artifacts buried somewhere under the dance floor. Initial song ideas ventured forth from disco, Art of Noise, and New Order, Bejar and Collins championing the over-the-top madcappery.

Spell 31
|
May 6 street date. Afro-Cuban, French twins Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Díaz, known to the world as Ibeyi, have returned with their new album "Spell 31". Featuring 10 new songs, written, produced and recorded by Ibeyi, who worked again with their long-time producer Richard Russell (Ash, Ibeyi), over the course of 2021 in London, "Spell 31" features appearances from Jorja Smith, Pa Salieu, BERWYN, Ibeyi's father and mother and a reimagining of Black Flag's "Rise Above". Inspired by a poem that Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi came across during the first recording session for the new album, "Spell 31", taken from The Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, not only reawakened in them the divine powers of Ibeyi, it became the premise for the first song they recorded for the new album ("Made Of Gold") and the album title. Since the release of their critically-acclaimed sophomore album Ash and the duo's globally acclaimed, eponymous debut album, Ibeyi's music has garnered fans and collaborators in some of the most iconic artists of today including Beyoncé, Alvin Ailey, JR, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Prince, Roy Hargrove, Adele, Kamasi Washington, David Byrne and Emicida; a result of Ibeyi's uniquely, captivating blend of Yoruban music with modern jazz, pop, electronic, soul and hip-hop.

Undying Thirst
|
February 28 street date. Black Market Brass' sophomore record, "Undying Thirst", is a noxious brew of diesel and bleach; a special long-player full of wasteoid rippers for skullduggerous hover-bike gangs peddling fugazi relics and snake oil tinctures. Hellacious guitars, nitrous-charged percussion, a brass section harsher than paint-thinner, and a special batch of short-circuited electronics and synthesizers will leave your head buzzing into the 31st century. Blasting "Undying Thirst" from your home speaker system is like going over a waterfall in a rusted out oil barrel, long after the sun has boiled the falls dry. RIYL Antibalas or The Budos Band.

Weird Nightmare |
Weird Nightmare (LOSER edition-cotton candy swirl)
|
May 20 street date. If you're looking for a raw, sugary blast of distorted pop, look no further than Weird Nightmare. The debut album from METZ guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkins contains all of his main band's bite with an unexpected, yet totally satisfying, sweetness. Imagine The Amps covering Big Star, or the gloriously hissy miniature epics of classic-era Guided by Voices combined with the bombast of "Copper Blue"-era Sugar - just tons of red-line distortion cut with the type of tunecraft that thrills the moment it hits your ears. These ten songs showcase a new side of Edkin's already-established songwriting, but even though the bulk of "Weird Nightmare" was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic some of its tunes date back to 2013 in demo form. "Weird Nightmare" is, in its own way, a study in extremes: Edkins' melodic instincts and penchant for dissonance are both turned up to the max throughout, the latter reflecting not only the barn-burning tendencies of METZ, but Alex's own sonic predilections.

Far In (2LP)
|
October 22 street date. When Roberto Carlos Lange, the musician known as Helado Negro, began writing 'Far In' immediately following the release of 'This is How You Smile' (spotlighted as Pitchfork's #7 "Best Album of 2019"), he could not have predicted that we would soon need to learn how to stay at home and be the stars of our domestic dance floors with intimates and online communities. Roberto and his partner, the visual artist Kristi Sword, had planned to visit Marfa, Texas for an early 2020 residency to work on their collaborative project 'Kite Symphony'. Once the pandemic hit, they decided to stay in Marfa through the summer, inspiring Roberto to write a significant amount of songs on the upcoming album. Driving back to Brooklyn in the fall inspired by his work in the desert, Roberto auspiciously purchased a Rhodes from a friend who 20 years earlier gave him his first synthesizer, an Arp Odyssey 2800. The electric piano was a catalyst that guided much of the remaining songwriting for the album.

Moon Duo |
Stars Are The Light
|
September 27 street date. "Stars Are The Light", the luminous seventh album by the American psych explorers Moon Duo, marks a progression into significantly new territory. From a preoccupation with the transcendental and occult that informed Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada's guitar-driven psych rock, and reached its apotheosis in the acclaimed "Occult Architecture" diptych, "Stars Are The Light" sees the band synthesize the abstract and metaphysical with the embodied and terrestrial. Branching out from "Occult Architecture Vol. 2", the album has a sonic physicality that is at once propulsive and undulating; it puts dance at the heart of an expansive nexus that connects the body to the stars. Taking disco as its groove-oriented departure point, "Stars Are The Light" shimmers with elements of '70s funk and '90s rave.

Sharp, Jason |
The Turning Centre Of A Still World (180g)
|
August 27 street date. Electroacoustic composer and saxophonist Jason Sharp presents his third album on Constellation and first purely solo recording. Following two acclaimed albums composed around particular collaborators and guest players, Sharp conceived "The Turning Centre Of A Still World" as an interplay strictly bounded by his own body, his acoustic instrument, and his bespoke electronic rig. The result is Sharp's most lucid, poignant, integral work to date - a singular sonic exploration of human/machine calibration, interaction, expression and biofeedback. Using saxophones, foot-controlled bass pedals, and his own pulse - patched through a heart monitor routed to various signal paths that trigger modular synthesizers and samplers - Sharp paints harmolodic waves of glistening synthesis, pink noise and digitalia. His sound palette evokes fellow-travelers like Fennesz, Klaus Schulze, Tim Hecker, Ben Frost and Colin Stetson. This immersive, intensive, widescreen electronic album could sit comfortably as a stellar contribution to the space/sci-fi/synth soundtrack genre. But this is ultimately deeper, grittier, earthier stuff - pulsing with terrestrial granularity, charting subterranean geographies of the heart and soul. Deluxe 180g vinyl includes four 12"x12" art prints of analog film stills by renowned experimental filmmaker Daïchi Saïto.

When released in September 2019 Pan Machine received rave reviews from all points of the compass from Electronic Sound to The Financial Times. Conceived by producer Ian Shirley, the Ebony Steel Band took on classic Kraftwerk tracks like The Model, Neon Lights, Europe Endless, Computer Love, Tour De France as well as neglected gems like Kometenmelodie 2 and Tanzmusic. Pan Machine LP has been out of print for over a year and with demand still there it seemed fitting to repress and reissue this modern classic.
